Canadian Solar, one of the world’s major producers of solar panels, has presented its next generation of PV modules. Introduction of a new 5th and 6th series of solar modules from early July, was followed last month by the introduction of a new Series 7. These new generations of modules enhanced by the latest in PV module technology, are bringing promising prospects by aiming to deliver one of the industry’s most competitive levelized costs of electricity (LCOE).
As Canadian Solar stated in their webinar, large panels are a trend that is here to stay. With that in mind, all new products are either made up of bigger cells (210mm) or an extra row of cells (compared to the standard size that has been the benchmark until today).

HiKu5 and BiHiKu5, which manufacturers say are an ideal solution for roofs, are available in both monocrystalline and polycrystalline 166mm half-cut cells with multi-bus bar (MBB) and paving technology. Improved efficiency and power classes up to 500W together with industry leading LeTID (light and elevated temperature induced degradation) mitigation technology, enable the HiKu5 to lower the LCOE of an installation by up to 4.0% compared to standard 450W modules.
HiKu6 and BiHiKu6, built of monocrystalline 182mm (M10) half-cut cells with multi-bus bar (MBB) and paving technology, power classes up to 590W and module efficiency of up to 21.3%. Compared with standard 405W modules, this series generates up to 2.7% higher energy yield over the module lifetime, reduces the BOS (balance of system) cost by up to 5.6%, and reduces the LCOE by up to 4.5%.
HiKu7 and BiHiKu7, an ideal solution for utility-scale and commercial and industrial PV projects, these models were introduced just last month and are expected to be available on the market by the end of Q2 2021. So far it is the most powerful product of the Canadian Solar range. Monocrystalline 210mm half-cut cells with power classes ranging from 640-665 W and efficiency ranging from 20.6-21.4%. Compared with standard HiKu 440 modules, this series reduces the LCOE by up to 6%.
The module design used in this new series is based on Canadian Solar’s proprietary HTR (hetero type ribbon) + PA (paving) technology, which combines both the advantages of half-cell panels and paved modules. This technology boosts module efficiency up to 21,3%, while making the module safer and more reliable.
Comprehensive LeTID mitigation technology ensures approximately 50% lower degradation than the industry standard values.
The use of dual cell technology will reduce micro-crack damages by 50%. On top of that, full adoption of multi bus-bar interconnection secures termination of micro-cracks at the busbar. The combination of these two technologies provides the absolute best solution for stopping micro-cracks.
It has been a successful year for Canadian Solar. The company has shipped over 46 GW modules cumulatively this year, introduced three whole new generations of modules and set a world record of 23.81% efficiency for N-type Large Area Multi-Crystalline Silicon Solar Cell. As PV-Tech magazine stated in their article, upcoming plans of Canadian Solar for 2021 are very ambitious. In total, Canadian Solar expects to have a total nameplate capacity of 18,200MW by the end of 2021. A major focus for Canadian Solar for next year will not only be centered on further improving module power and efficiency, but also on the integration of solar energy together with other renewable energy sources and energy storage.
Solarity has been an official distributor of Canadian Solar panels since 2012. Over our many years of collaboration the claim rate has been less than 0,001 %. As we have access to most of Canadian Solar products in stock, your order can be shipped immediately. Visit our e-shop or contact us for more information.
